Knit Tips

Want to create but not sure where to start?  You're in the right place!

Miss Knitty would love to help you step into the world of knitting - we know you'll love it here.  There's nothing quite like being able to say "thanks, I made it!" when someone compliments your sweater!

It may seem daunting at first - it might feel like patterns are written in another language.  But we'll soon have you feeling like a pro and ready to take on anything.

First things first - what do you want to make?

If it's your first time ever picking up yarn and needles, a simple cowl or scarf is a great way to practice stitches and get used to the movement of the needles in your hands.  If you have plenty of time and patience, a blanket is practical and fun but remember the bigger you make it, the longer it takes to finish!

If that doesn't appeal and you're keen to try something a little more challenging, a simple beanie might be the way to go.

If you're heading straight into the deep end and want a stunning, wearable item that will have others asking where you got it - jump right on in and try a cardigan or sweater, or something else - let us know what you're after and we will help you figure out something that suits!

Secondly - what pattern?

You'll find Brenda Lam's (@beatificbrenda) stunning cardigan and sweater patterns on our patterns page which are written clearly and suited for a beginner.

Miss Knitty is working on patterns for hats, blankets and scarves which will be available free here - this is a work in progress, watch this space!  If you can't wait, flick us a message and we will help you out.

If you can't find what you're looking for here, Miss Knitty is always available to help.  We'd love to walk you through the process and help you find something that speaks to you.

Flick an email to hello@missknitty.co.nz if you get stuck with anything and we can give tips or even a video chat to get you out of a sticky situation.  Don't worry - we've all been there before and totally understand how important it is to have someone available to talk it through!

Next - which yarn?

Miss Knitty's range of 100% merino chunky yarn is beautifully suited to beginners and gives a stunning finish for any garment.  Brenda Lam patterns available on our site are suited perfectly to Miss Knitty yarn.  Choose your favourite colour or combination and you're good to go.  Remember to check the pattern for the quantity required - if you're not sure then send us a message.

Our stunning range of luxury yarns are perfect for all patterns that call for 4ply/fingering weight, or 8ply/DK (double knit) yarn.

Sock yarn is not just for socks - sock yarn typically contains a small percentage of nylon, making it hardier but still delightfully soft.

What about the needles?

Here on Miss Knitty we have circular needles in size 9mm-15mm.  These needles are perfect for using Miss Knitty chunky yarn.

Circular needles are great for all projects - spread the weight of your project across the needle and you can make sure you don't run out of space on the needle if you're in the middle of a large project like a blanket.

Circular needles are also required to knit seamlessly - super efficient and giving a tidy finish - best part is NO SEWING UP!

If you're wanting to use a different weight yarn and not sure which needles to use, let us know and we can point you in the right direction.

Finally - how do you do the witchcraft?

Two sticks clicking together with a piece of string turning into something awesome?  No problem!
